The author in the OC basically made everything desaturated in the N-th degree and color crushed everything with Oranges and Blues. Concepts are quick so there is to consider that. Try tinting the AO on the face (or any skin on your model) wit a red hue and pull it back a little too. Keep it nice and subtle so that way it still emphasises the form and cavities, and it partially fakes SSS a little too.
