Do not agree at all, then you're getting totally random ray hits as you have large gaps in the model. What he's doing makes a whole lot more sense. He can also easily create a color mask from the bits modeled into the cutouts, and make those areas black in the texture. Personally though I would exaggerate some nice fat… -

With this latest iteration, I think I still agree with what Mark Dygert said a few post up in that the bulky middle part, which I would call the forward grip, is a bit flat. Not that it looks unrealistic, it just isn't as interesting as the rest of the model. Maybe it can be converted somehow?… -

for the specular in your tiles, id get rid of those really dark areas in the top right/bottom left. there isnt anything really there in the diffuse that warrants it being dark. one thing you could do that would be a bit interesting is grab a few random selections of tiles and change the value of the underlying base color.… -

I tried it in Marmoset and it was glitchy, but I just retried it and it looks fine, I guess it may have been a glitch or setting. I have tried to enlarge the cage, and fiddled with it, but I still get those random tears in it. Does Max suck at baking normals or something? Because any time I've tried to bake more complex… -
