most real time FX is primitive shapes combined with animated shaders and particles, and probably a healthy bit of scripting. all of which is better done in engine than maya or max. I'd try looking for free vfx assets from unity store and dissecting those.

Definitely tough to get used to.. I'm getting better, but still not good enough to love it yet. The art is hit and miss, mostly miss though . The VFX are absolutely horrendous for the most part. Pretty sad for a fantasy game that relies heavily on FX. Oh well, I'm still playing it.
