I tried to render the volume texture of a tree with the slice+cap method but as you said the vertical bark of the tree was almost completely invisible so I had to create an array of cylinders to simulate the bark and give shell modifier to the leaves so they don't look like sheets of paper. Unless you're doing technical drawing and absolutely need perfect perspective, using an ellipse template for laying out your guides is unlikely to be particularly necessary.
