Use an user channel, those channels are interpreted as linear, so no gamma correction (even at export).

Play around with the import normals setting in unreal. Or with the export normals setting in max. This shouldn't happen.

Try changing .fbx export settings from "fbx 2013" to something like "fbx 2009"

say, export that part of the model as a obj with faces set to triangles, then import it back in and weld it in place? =)

You must do that inside of UDK. Exporting materials/shaders and importing them into UDK is impossible.

i had similar problems. it solved easy , i just export model to obj , and then reimport
