on the zbrush-side, preferences -> import/export also has options to flip the axes around.

Tried that. Also tried switching to 16 bit in photoshop before exporting. Same result. :(

makes no difference, once you export to smd and compile, it will split verts with hard normals.

You could try the free MakeHuman program. You modify a human and export an OBJ of it.
