How does that work out in Unreal? From what I gather (and have grumblingly abided by in past work projects), in Unity this breaks static batching - they seem to have a 1 mesh, 1 material rule for batching together meshes of the same type.
Depends on the engine - some will store a separate gloss and specular value as part of a G-Buffer. Some, like Unity, do some hacky stuff - storing the specular value in the alpha of the albedo G-Buffer - means you don't get coloured specular.
You should probably render in a real-time engine like Marmoset Toolbag, Unity, Unreal Engine, etc. Mental Ray isn't used in games, and Maya software won't give you game-quality visuals without using custom shaders.
