Yeah I'm really happy with the UV updates so far. I used to take my model out of 3DC to do the UVs in LightWave. In my current project I didn't have to do that, it's been in 3DC since it started.
Marie just out of curiosity, howcome you think Topogun has a faster workflow than 3DC? Apart from being comfortable with it, wondered if Topogun had any amazing tools for retopo. Personally love 3DC, the workflow is super fast :)
I was trying to convince of 3dc, but failed. You know how programmers are if they think "its good enough". That, and we have the specs alpha in the normal maps (long story and bleh engine), which Im not sure 3dc would even allow as it is. Results vary. Look fugly to me, but ehh.
Both CryENGINE 3 and UDK use 8bit, though CryENGINE has much better compression than UE3 (currently at least) due to a modified 3Dc/BC5 encoder. The compression is much cleaner than the DXT1/5 or the BC5/3Dc encoder that is currently available in UDK. http://www.crytek.com/download/AdvRTRend_crytek.ppt
You could try this test to figure out if it's bug in your 3dc version or maybe a graphics card driver one or it's with your model (maybe overlapping or stray faces not apparent in your unwrap view). Load your model but let 3dc apply it's own auto uv mapping. Then try to paint per pixel or projection.
Might also want to note that a 4Mb 1024x1024 is RGBA (has alpha) without alpha it's 3Mb. (8-bit) According to the wiki, 2:1 compression ratio from an 8-bit source, so 1.5Mb for a 1024x1024 3DC? (as I doubt the source normal maps have an alpha channel) Multiply by 4 for double the size, so 6Mb for 2048x2048 3DC.
If I can help it, I always go from Zbrush to 3DC for painting. But some assets I do get away with just Zbrush. I would sell my left kidney if Zbrush's mesh painting aspect was on par with 3DC, I really don't like jumping between programs so much.
Ill give the 3DC tools a longer run asap :) They seems less fluid that TGs to me last time I tried, but hey there might have been an update or something I missed! (or - we could share a mesh, and show the world how to use both 3DC retopo and TG tools at their best on video! hehe)
Every time I've ever tried to learn & use Maya for anything, I've always torn my hair out in frustration. Thats awesome East. I use 3DC for retopo and never knew you could just draw the 1 line w/ stroke and have it fill in the number of sides. +1 vote for 3DC or even Silo.
