I just took the image, sharpened it a little, duplicated it as another layer, then brightened it a tad/did some color adjustments, and erased parts of that top layer that I thought were too bright. Squares in characters are bad. Squares are hard, 90 degree angles, found in machines and architecture. The body is soft, bend, it stretchs and contracts. The muscles flow into one another. Everything you've said there is correct, but I think you need to make a differentiation between a pre-rendered and game res character here -- it sounds like what you're wanting is a cross between the two (normal mapped low res but with pre-rendered shaders). To clarify this can be a patchy mix of formal education and work experience, they add everything up to make the equivalent of a degree. So it can be an unfinished double degree, a two year diploma, and a few years experience. Maybe post some of your work too, this will give an indication as to what you should be focusing…
