Keep in mind that Max's scanline renderer is synced with Max's baker, so scanline renders will always look awesome - which is a big part of the problem. Viewport shaders in max on the other hand.... Anyway, as Ace was sort of suggesting above, beveling/chamfering some of these shapes along the sharp edges will get you… -

the weird thing about that process is that when I was messing with that as an option the group properties version actually wasn't exactly the same! probably because rather than accepting the 0-255 value as a channel it instead grabs only the R,G, or B element of the greyscale... hard to explain but check out below -… -

We could have. Generating the height in Designer is just faster and automatically updates anytime we rebake or tweak the normal. You'll find that with organic/high frequency surfaces, the height generated by the filter in SD is very close to what you would have baked and the quality is good enough for this asset that… -

The alternative is to model out the shapes which is probably not going to be faster. If you have Mudbox, Zbrush, or 3D Coat you can export a PSD to projection paint on in Photoshop or Krita.
