most of the time I create black and white mask out the id map. So if something is on top of something else I have no AA issues. -

Just wanted to update this in case anyone else has this problem. If you mirror things properly (using the symmetry modifier) you won't have this problem. -

if you're using normal/displacememnt maps then you should remember the following - it supercedes everything else you'll ever read on the subject lighting is independent of topology -

Adding onto what everybody else has said, I've always found you need to use a bit higher of a poly count with cylindrical objects.
