I think you've got a great blocking down of the general face form. Along with what Panda and ja000ha suggested, remove the wrinkles and focus on building the skin folds and muscle formations. isnt the layer name, one of the inputs of any object in a layer? should be able to see it right in the channel box? if that isnt enough i could make you a little bit of python that finds and selects the layer of the selected object or prints the name. off the top of my head here is the code to have have the layer name…

pm_normalviewheight, i think There's an awesome new feature of the console, basically type in 'find height' and it will bring up any cvar, command, image, decl, model etc that contains the substring 'height'.
