I think you might have misunderstood how the plugin works (or maybe I misunderstood your post :) ). When you select a group for export you're exporting that group into a channel of the exported image, you're not selecting which channel of the source image you want to export. In the high poly you want the pieces of the fire hydrant to blend together. Thats how it is in real life. They are melded together by a blow torch or something. It's ok that you have them separate in your low poly but I wouldnt have done it that way. I wouldve modeled it as one unit and had seams where the parts meet.… -

To render edgeFinder put a vertex colour node in the diffuse. To bake this just bake a diffuse element onto the low poly. Tension is a little complex at first. render - the thing is, in theory, I don't want the center left vertex to be deleted.
