Include your source files/fbx's for us to take a look at, it would be much easier to diagnose rather than throw a dozen speculations of what could be the culprit. -

Looks good, I'm not very experienced with shaders and particle effects, but I'd try and include some randomness in how that neon sign throws off the little sparks. -

also, VFX includes more than just digital/CGI work, which is why Mad Max's practical effects and SWs puppetry are worth bringing up. -
