Looks like there were power problems at the colo, the server was forcibly rebooted at least once and it crashed the database. I've rebuilt and things should be fine now.
Would consider most of Valves offerings to be solo experiences myself... never really sat down and played HL2 with others, or even games like DOTA... always over the net.
