It's not a realtime renderer, but the Cycles renderer that ships with Blender is physically-based if you set it up right and the render quality is quite high.

No need to collapse it for rendering, just make sure if has enough subdivisions for rendering(there are 2 subdivision parameters, one for rendering and one for realtime)

What are you rendering in? For offline rendering there's a bunch of texturing and UV techniques that you can use that have nothing to do with realtime rendering.
In the viewport, try turning on High Quality Rendering. Renderer>>High Quality Rendering The default viewport filters textures down to a lower resolution.
