Does anyone know of any companies in the UK that specialise in this area, simply taking on excess work from developers but specialising in characters? If anyone has worked for one, what are your experiences like? Is the development environment different from what you would expect from a regular development company? Cheers.

dependent on where you are and what you can do. there is certainly outsourcing companies who work with remote people. you'd not make the california type of big bucks, but it should guarantee you a decent level of income. certainly better than running for the bottom on fiverr
Not bad, should output without to much of a hassle, as a 3d print. Aside from games / film also research toy companies for jobs, mainly outsourced these days but I think global US or Euro brands still have their own inhouse art departments.
Props can definitely get your foot in the door for the outsource studios who specialize in that area. That's where I started and I've seen it happen countless times at this point. I agree though, not as useful if you're looking for a full enviro art position at a studio.
This can happen in any studio where the staff is uneducated about IP issues, where the staff includes people who just don't care, where crunch and deadlines force people to take questionable shortcuts. This doesn't just happen to outsourcers in Elbonia only.
