I just did this quickly to show two areas that I think might be good to start. The whole angle of the cheek seems a bit off, I think you might need to bring the cheek bone in a bit to help correct that. You also need to bring the area under the eye closer into the nose. Square the chin a bit too :) -

I'm sorry I didn't quite understand. Do you mean upper or lower part of the axe, because both parts have gem and spikes. And its not totally flat as you can see in this front side render.(Sorry about red line's roughnes, I just quickly draw it with mouse) By the way I use Blender. -

I found the tutorial videos of ChiliTomatoNoodle Youtube quite easy to get into, he might take a while to explain things, but I've never really felt lost when watching his tutorials, he starts the basics, but also gets you into the action and starting to make stuff happen pretty quickly.… -

Meh. I've been running Windows 8 for awhile now and haven't run into any compatibility issues with 3d software (or games..). It boots up super quickly and some of the UI improvements are nice. The only thing that I think is a MUST ADD is Start8. Gets rid of metro entirely. I don't think I've been into the metro interface… -
Re: UDK Lighting
If you're baking out your lighting, why not just run a lighting build set to preview, in order to quickly check the final visual? If it never gets the way you want, you can always add a dynamic light in that area, to get the desired effect. Just keep an eye on the lighting scene complexity and don't let it get out of hand. -

I also think the 100K limit should be lifted while I do like to bake in Modo, I find baking in Substance Painter much quicker. It's not a issue for me since I have a commercial license but you'll quickly hit that 100K limit if you need to bake in SD/SP, this makes Modo indie not very pipeline friendly. -

As mentioned, get more RAM. While you didn`t mention UDK, if you ever have to do any scene bakes with Lightmass with higher quality settings, you`ll max out that 8 Gigs very quickly. Right now I`m running 16g and I very regularly max it out during baking in UDK. -

Re: Blending textures
It is better to do a smaller test scene, so you can verify all steps, before you make the whole thing. If you make the whole scene, one step at a time, you will have to re-do a lot of work if a particular step does not work properly. It is better to work small, so you can learn quickly.
