Well, your skins are textures, so you just import the models into a 3d app of your choosing, then apply a material, then assign the textures to the matching slots. Mainly the diffuse color. That was a bug that they patched early on in 3dsmax2012, so make sure you're running the latest service pack. I think, if you held down shift or alt or some combination it would revert back to the standard way of scaling uniformly, but you should still get the latest service pack.… -

I just google image searched "WW2 oil barrel" :) But that's the crux of reference gathering and googlefu... you have to try "WW2", "WWII", "Chemical Barrel", "Oil Barrel", "Barrel", "Container", "Hazmat", or whatever, in all sorts of permutations. If you're modeling really old stuff, look for a collectors' market for that…
