To play real and quicktime you'll need codec packs: Real Alternative Quicktime Alternative I believe the MPC guy decided not to bundle the codecs with MPC for legal reason. Or maybe it was just to keep the size of the download down.
HOw about iTunes taking over my quicktime. So now all my quicktime files try to open in a little fucking square at the bottom of iTunes. It's a controlling, unnecessary, program. There is no need for it other than Apple requires it.
.mov IS the way to go, as divx or xvid requires you to have the codecs installed. EVERYONE in a games studio will probably have them, but they will certainly have Quicktime installed. The last 2 places I have worked prefer quicktime.
I remember Quicktime had some codecs for solid colors, which compressed them really well, but you'd be stuck with Quicktime. When using H264 have you tried a variable bitrate (VBR) vs a fixed bitrate?

Just saying .avi or .mov doesn't tell us what codec you're using. Quicktime/Animation is a lot bigger that Quicktime/Soreson.
