On a site note, is there a valid reason why 3dsmax can't undo a reset xform? Maya has no problem undoing freeze transformation, don't really see how that's different...

No:) Use whatever topo tool you are comfortable with. If it is organic I usually use Zbrush but if it mechanical I will use 3dsmax. Try using Zbrush - Zbrush UV Master for Unwrapping...amazing
LRoy thanks! About 20 subtools for the gun, some of them have been merged. The shoes and trousers were retopoed in 3dsmax using the concept zbrush meshes. The gun is all zbrush.
