Substance designer is mostly for making materials while substance painter is for straight painting materials onto your models. Both will take UVed items though. Designer is really great for procedurally building tiling textures.
As weird as this may read, I would actually encourage you to make learning the names a part of your studying process. If anything, it's one more item that gives identity and recognition to the shapes you're familiarizing yourself with.
Sorry I suppose that didn't quite come across as I meant. Even working in the industry having to pay the usual bills.etc and general cost of living doesn't really allow for alot of spare cash for such items.
That's a good shout. Most of her more exotic-looking gear are hero items in and of themselves, so I'll probably be showcasing them individually as well. If the final character's bake needs a tone down in detail, that's ok.
Best example I can think of, off hand is this: The handle , tone variance of the main green color. Then lots of small changes in the more brilliant metallic parts. Also more colored trim items throughout.

Why is your backpack full? Craft all that shit! I've seriously never had my backpack over halfway full because I only use about 6 of the items and craft everything else.
Unfortunately that option only seems to control border edges. The option I'm thinking of exists in Shading > Thicker Lines and affects most viewport items not just polys. Makes things much easier at high res.
Looking good so far I think the thing that is makeing the scene seem small is that your scale on certain items seems off Your rails on the stairs seem a bit thick and the seats thickness is a bit heavy
