We include ray bounces because that's the way light works ('all models are wrong' notwithstanding) in the real world, and replicating reality is usually the ultimate goal of a path tracer. Whether the original face needed modifying or not...You can't really say that without knowing what they had in mind. Evidently, they didn't think a perfect replica would quite fit what they had in mind. I don't think that's a fault. Most or all AAA games now seem to use scans as base material, and real people as motion…
