Seems like the vertex at the tip is really two vertices in your mesh. Weld them and you should see the desired behaviour.

What I'm hoping for is something that works essentially like the "Average Vertices" tool, but compares the verts to the UVs instead of to each other.

Those are fighting games, not beat-em-ups. Although there's not much difference in their backgrounds other than verticality. Keep that in mind if this wins.

maybe the way you welded vertices together can caused this.. Try to do STL check in max and reexport.. It helps sometime.

You have a seam running down the middle of the front of the grip; were those vertices not welded when you joined the halves?

it looks awesome, vertical gradient is way to strong though. In my opinion, it's to dark at the bottom and to bright at the top. I love it though.

Editable Poly has more restrictions on welding vertices together than Editable Mesh. Try converting to EM, see if it works.

also stars (vertices connecting more than 4 edges) can cause pinching and you have them in your mesh
