I did notice some flickering in spots in L4D, but overall it seemed to work pretty well for a Beta. -

I've been working with the alpha flicker for 7 years now, I doubt alias will ever fix the problem. -

I think the biggest problem is the lighting and atmosphere. I don't know what kind of mood you are trying to sell but I guess it would be a great set for something creepy. There is tons of reference you can find on that. Maybe add some fog, a flickering light, adding a dead body in the corner or adding some green or blue…
