You made a biped... did you rig it? You need to set up a rig in order to get proper controls and rotations. However if you want to do some animation why not use a free rig like the Morpheus rig? http://www.joshburton.com/projects/morpheus.asp
I never got pass algebra... Second option would make the end effectors of a HD rig act the same as a Hi IK goal. Per the HD rig works perfectly, on the actual rig versus above with using another IK'ed rig. Pass, not passed.

Upload to Mixamo, automatic rig it, test the deformation, export the rig, import in maya, check the weight of the automatic rig. I did this and it was a big help to understand how to paint them.
