I forget what Unreal's implementation does but in principle the mesh only "needs" to split where you have hard edges - obviously UV seams will cause discontinuities as well. if you were to soften all the edges on the original model it would probably do roughly what you want. it might look a bit weird in places. That's really aggravating. I can see "source" versions nice to have around. But honestly, I dont have lots of time to go through the original games for the 4th? time. Why cant they offer two versions of normal games these days? CD and DVD? The amount of CD's they have to pack into boxes now, should make them more expensive…
