Tried all of that nothing works :( I tried using textures that I know work with another model so I don't think it's the textures as the same error appears. As a weapon i've just bound it to the weapon joint; selected both the weapon and the joints and then exported as an FBX.
Post images of your hierarchie and your animators. What i understand is, that you control your weapon animation through the character animator. Which is the wrong approach. The weapon animation shound be independend from the character animator and the weapon should have its own animator.
I gave up on doing real world weapons as the weapon nerds are too much too take. You're off to a good start, keep at it! It sounds like you have a hint of weapon dork in your blood so you should fair pretty well.

Let me guess, you downloaded the files and imported the "weapon" mesh, but when you import the "weapon" slot, you get it like this? Notice the left hand is empty? Weapon mesh is actually offhand and vice-versa, Volvo messed up the files.
