I'm with Eric. Max can push a ton of instanced geo. Why bother exporting when you can bake in max?

Yep, Eric has it - use the UVW XForm modifier. That way you can guarantee it's a perfect move/scale by a given value.

Well if you guys are working on it then that information is good enough for me, I'll manage with rotating the uv for now. Thanks Eric and Ingemar!

Hey Eric, I've tried projecting into the correct uv space so the colours don't mismatch, but I still get a seam?

You could get those two objects together, although as Eric said it depends if you need or want them separated.
