I remember how long it took until shaders became a requirement for games and until DVDs became the standard medium for large games. While it may be good for MS, NVidia and Ati if games require upgrades it's not good for the game itself and that's one of the things managers want to avoid as much as possible. I'd expect it… -

It's the other way around. Typically it's poor driver implementations that cause many compatibility issues with 3d software. Every now and then for both Nvidia and ATI/AMD they will introduce drivers that break things in various programs.
