Maybe start with some observation drawing; away from the computer. Pencil or even better, colour media. Nowt wrong with starting out with Still Life, doesn't have to be fruit etc., can be the contents of your desk for example. Avoid just drawing outlines (which is why I don't recommend Pencil for a beginner). Observe… -

Ha I got the same Moleskine :P And I so hear you about the cheap materials thing - when it comes to penciling I only use the cheap bic mechanical pencils that one can find pretty much everywhere in the world I think. Actually I have one of them grip ones that I keep refilling, it's still working after years of use haha!… -

yeah the pencil stuff does look better, theres alot to learn when digital painting. My advice dont use airbrushes or soft brushes so much harder brushes often give better results, dont use black in your shadows so much. I have to agree with achillesian at this point the pencil/real media images look more appealing -

I like pen, pencil, and/or non-photo blue pencil with either regular old paper or graph paper for the initial drawings to be quite honest. It's easier to make the marks that you want to make without having to adjust them afterwards. You'll need a scanner to get the results into your computer accurately though. For cleaning…
