They see it as a solid piece of final geometry. Some might not read it at all and you'll have to collapse it before it will read everything. To take care of the mirrored bits you use the type in transform tools in the UV editor window inside of max, which are just like the type in transform tools just below the time line… -

Max's handling of non square UVs is pretty bad- I think your best bet is to type in a U offset of 1 for the sheet you want on the right. Then add some extra objects to your mesh and place their verts at exact UV cord corners (0,0 0,1 2,0 and 2,1). Then with grid snap on and the free transform gizmo you can move the right… -
