You explained it pretty well, but it is easier to see the difference when you can scrub it. Here try it out: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2336353/AnisoComp_Anim.mov
If that happens to not be the problem try downloading the latest update for your version of Max. Max 2012 shipped with a bug that broke the skin modifier. http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/dl/index?siteID=123112&id=2334435&linkID=9241178
I have a Samsung SyncMaster 2333SW which has a TN Panel and there is no problem with color shifting or poor viewing angles at all. But EarthQuake is right, getting one with a good panel(most TN panels are really shitty) should be your highest priority.

Then you have to delete the 3dsmax.ini file to reset max to defaults and go through the hassle of setting…
Yea a lot of people have been on them to change the UV Editor to a mode you enter at any time (just like Maya) instead of a goofy modifier you have to juggle. I had my fingers crossed when they said they where overhauling the UV editor for 2012 but they managed to crush my hopes with their fake update. Don't get me wrong…
I put the ref image here in case anyone can't get it to come up. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2336353/tb_mui_ne_sand_dunes.jpg I would probably do some sculpting but only after tossing a few modifiers on a plane. Wave modifier. Skew. Noise, to give it some chaos. Turbosmooth and noise again, to give it some micro sand details…
