Hey, I experience awful blender performance when switch to edit mode even with low to mid poly models (50k etc.). Is there a magic button in the settings that i missed to enable? I got rtx 4080 with i9 14900 and whatever ssd and ram that is best.

I think you could get fairly close with niagara - getting the flow vector out of the water might be tricky/impossible but if you can it should be relatively simple. I'm pretty certain the developers made engine mods to achieve this effect though
if you have to use mud, you have to do it the mudbox way... mud is extremly picky about topo and uvs... mud is also not for design sculpting... its more a detailing software... without a good base its hard to get something out of mud... if i had to do a sculpt in mud only my workflow would be... rough scetch...…
