As for the amount of sides/1000 poly limit: then sacrifice some polies from the stick part. Currently the explosive half is just too angular, as it's twice the diameter of the stick but using the same amount of sides. If you really don't want to use more polies, you could make the small part 16 sided and the big part 24…

8bit per channel, pretty much every image you find (JPEG, TGA) is 8bit per channel, ie 24bit image or 32(24 + 8 for alpha). Not 8bit as in 8bit total for the image like a GIF. 16 or 32 bit per channel images are used to get higher precision, but not really used in games aside from HDR cubemap image based lighting in some.
Just to be clear you mean to say it's better to pack information into the RGB channels than it is to pack it into the the alpha channel because the alpha channel is the same a having a full 24 bit texture. I have a quick question then why does Marmoset only support alpha in the alpha channel of the albedo texture? Wouldn't…
