Yes, thats how I do aswell, but as in turtle, you could just have an attribute (subdiv enable)

Try enabling the Per Pixel Camera Vector flag in the material settings. This will allow you to use Vertex Colors along side Transform's.

Give this a shot. Or maybe try separating the objects. You only need to worry about the gamma if you have gamma correction enabled.

It only works with Spot-Lights or Directional Lights. Be sure to enable Depth-Map Shadows on the Lights that you want Shadows to be cast from.

In maya I have to hit undo at least twice to undo. I've probably got a special setting enabled somewhere, anyone know what it might be?

It looks like the model is not importing as a file reference object, which is required for animation loading. Go to Edit -> Preferences -> Content, and make sure Import Models as References is enabled.
