i've successfully used it in 2009 at least. did you assign the functions you're after to hotkeys, the quadmenu or toolbars? -

yea, optimize is a horrible modifier. So horrible that they replaced it with polycruncher in 2009. Still not perfect but a hell of a lot better. -
