Should I be able to create a animated gif from the animation preview tool in 3DS Max? The file format doesn't come up as an option when I am saving...is there a plugin that'll allow me to save it out directly as an animated gif?

you have to choose animation instead of still image it usually should be there. A better way to get your gif animations with better color tables (without the default ones) is to load your raw animation MOV or AVI into photoshop cs3+ and then hit save for web and set the colors to adaptive or something like that.

the image sequence also works but I am not sure if it works with cs2 or below, in that case test it with ImageReady.
