Sketchbook : Alec3d
Hi, my name is Alec and I'm fourteen years old, I've been into 3d for about a year and a half and about 6 months ago I learnt about game engines, purchased the Unity engine and I have a quite nice understanding of javascript. I mostly model,texture and animated organics but I have done a few guns with hands holding them, usual FPS stuff. My characters are getting better but I'd like to have a chat with this community, get some advice so that when the time comes I'll have quite a nice CV.
Anyway, enough blabbering!

This M16 was modeled by my friend who I introduced 3d to, I did the texture, I modeled the hands and textured those and I animated all of it for reload animations etc.
A male character (It's a WIP, I want to do the whole shebang (normal map etc)
So I'll be updating this every now and then, I hope to hear from you guys!

Concepted on paper yesterday, tonight I'm speed modeling an ODST like character from Halo, will be posting updates regularly tonight (australia EST)
(about an hours work whilst learning how to use silo for the first time)

Just added a few little things, the character is a kind of eastern/sci-fi chracter, inspired by the ODST (halo)
also: not sure how silo handles this but personally I'd go for edge modelling instead of box modelling (although it seems to work for you so there's no way why one should complain).
And heres a timeline (Don't forget I was learning silo at the time!)
Modeling - one and a half hours
UV Mapping - 3 hours (my gaaaaawd that was brutal)
Texturing - one and a half hours
Looks good, I'm probably going to use it as a base for a more detailed medium poly w/ normal map model.
I'm probably going to add more stuff like thigh guards that got cut, and maybe some extra little equipment pieces and also clean up visible seems and just polish,polish POLISH!
Overall, an awesome modeling weekend... Probably through the week after the model is completely done I might do a gun for him and probably put him in a game (Now if that sounds far fetched, I've done it before!)

My first attempt at normal mapping and optimizing.

1. drawing on it wont feel like exactly like drawing with a pen or pencil so start off with something easier...for example try colouring in some drawings for practice

2. if you do want to draw using a tablet a good tip is to start big - it just seems to hard to draw a nice character with clean lines straight out of nowhere. So go BIG, I mean big brushes, big shapes and then you can create layers above these big shapes to refine the design down to a nice detailed concept character or whatever and even hide those initial big shapes once youve got the design sorted.
