Hey there folks,i anunfortunately am being forced to quite quickly update my portfolio, which im sure you know what that means, new job soon very likely. And well i am not good at designing my own work to do on the fly so i am wondering does anyone know of any good environment concept artists i could possibly ask for permission to do their work in 3d?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say looking in these areas are essential.

    http://turtleart.net/artists.php

    http://www.fengzhudesign.com/

    http://www.khangle.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=4

    http://www.tinfoilgames.com/gallery.php

I would then go through all the concept artists featured in the Unearthly challenge and link around there.

There is hella environment links all over polycount, this forum is how I got linked to all my bookmarked artists. But that should get you something.

I really wish ConceptArt.org was easier to view peoples work... I dont really get that site... I find myself sometimes wading through Deviant art preferably to ConceptArt, but all I can think about is what am I missing at ConceptArt because I refuse to interface with it. I really want to find the time one day to go through it all one day.

sparth has got some dope concept work, some is pretty looseish so it leave a lot to interpret, interesting how people see different things sometimes.

Micro: haha whats hard to navigate with CA? i usually flick through the its finally finished forum, its always got some awesome work poppin up, ex: dead space concepts, god of war art etc, blows my mind.

Well ya, I guess lots of people are ok with it, i dont expect an uprising, but personally I cant use the site the way I want to.

its not that i find it difficult to navigate, by easier, I meant I wish it was easier for me to stand the load times long enough to view some significant amount of art. For some reason the load times are super long for me before I even get to the specific artists selection of lightbox'd load times for each piece of work. I find that in order to get to a single piece of art it takes me too long, so i cant spend time looking at the number of pieces I want to, or need to in order to make any real sense of that site. Call me impatient I guess. But it seems too slow for me to just randomly meander through like I want to do.

One sunday though Ill spend the day on the site and pull out the personal websites I like I guess.

good luck with the search javier. if there is anything i can do, please let me know. i think you have to ask for a recommendation on linkdin, but if you do i would recommend you whole heatedly. you are by far one of the most inspiring people ive worked with. your attention to detail and drive to constantly improve yourself and your artwork made me strive to do the same.

im sure someone of your caliber wont be jobless long, and please keep us advised.

Thanks for all the links and encouraging words Ryan. Thankfully it looks like i do have some time to plan out my situation and sort everything out. From the looks of it i think ill have a job until the end of march which is when we finish working on the Watchmen downloadable title. We get alot of hate on the internet and sent to our studio because theres tons of Watchmen fanbois out there but people dont understand that a small indy studio like mine needs to do what it needs to do to survive.
But i am really proud of working on the game,we have had a small crew and we have produced a small downloadable next gen within less than a year that looks good and had been made with no crunch what so ever. Our total number of environment artists is 4 including myself. So i will have lots of portfolio work and another shipped title in the end.

But i am being real proactive about my situation because i would like to be in the best possible position to land a job after if need be. I think i need 1 really nice wow piece and the rest of the portfolio can be supported by other personal artwork and stuff i have produced for the Watchmen title. For now at least for one more job i would like to remain in Europe because going back to America would be damn hard,i dont own a car and to buy one i would need a loan which the banks are not giving so it complicates things.

Guess today i will sit down and figure out a plan to update the old portfolio.

I worked with the guy at DigitalExtremes, he made a ton of stuff for Dark sector, quite an awesome dude, very cool concepts to work from.

about the watchmen game : fanboys shouldn' t be listened at, I was honestly surprised by such good graphics for an xbox live game (not that all XLA/PSN games look ass, but a lot of them have very simple graphics) and was actually searching more info about it, will certainly at least give the demo a try, if it's fun, I'll probably buy it. but man working on a big IP like that, especially with a feature movie being released at the same time, must be exhausting for an indie developer.

Yes itsbeen interesting,we have been fortunate in that we have had good management who has not been afraid to go to the publisher and let them know if a request is too unreasonable in terms of time and manpower. So for the most part the game has been on time and rolling along. Artistically one advantage is that with just for environment guys it means that they have alot of faith in us as artists so in terms of total art guidance i am left to my own devices to make my work look good within the time scale. We get feedback from the AD but for the most part management trusts us as artists to do a good job. Since all 4 of us enviro guys are professional and very well qualified there hasnt been a weak link in the chain.

My favorite aspect has also been basically having a level of my own,my baby sorta speak. So i have been able to keep a level of consistancy in art sstyle in the entire level that can be difficult if several artists work on it. So each level, although consistant have a style of their own. Asiide from effects and a few resused props 94% of the props, geometry, normal maps, specular and diffuse maps have been created by me.
