Take over the world? no... Becoming the MS of the internet? Yeah. Not MS in the "we're going to empty your wallet" kind of way, but just the standard for everything.
I depend on my iGoogle page. I use it for gadgets that connect to my Google Calender, Gmail, Google Docs, Google Bookmarks, Google Maps, and various others for notes and lists. All accessed from one page wherever I go. I can check, and interact with most of these, all from that one page...or it's tabs, which is easier with their recent interface update. And some gadgets I share with others on their iGoogle page, so we're all on the same page. My day isn't the same without it.

So yes, Google is plotting to take over the world...'s internet.
Im down with google. They are simple and effective. Now if they move there base of operations to some remote island and claim it as a country.....then we might need to be worried....
I remember back in the day, talking with some drunk nerdy guy at gdc in sf about google. Aparently he worked there, and was talking some crazy jibberish about how you could type in where you are and the food you wanted, and it would direct you there......low and behold google maps hit not too long after. I shoulda goten that guys card.....

Seriously, for a while now I've been seriously considering de-Googlifying myself and getting myself off their grid since Google has become way too wired into my daily routines and life for me to feel wholly comfortable.
It's difficult, though, since Google still feels nice, and non-Evil. I mean, how can an entity with that logo ever be evil? Honestly, the success of Google just feels a bit too well manufactured the more you look at it.
Not sure how many know this but Google has been buying up something commonly called the "dark fibre network" for years. Apparently no one wanted to pay for or maintain the fibre optic networks that are all over the globe due to the expense so Google stepped in and started buying it up, they have their own visions of what the Internet should be and may very well have the infrastructure to support that.
Google are supposed to be very pro Net Neutrality, for good reason, they oppose the regulation that the likes of AT&T have been proposing in the last year or two. And... they oppose copyright legislation like Orphan Works.
Obviously not all of the reasoning behind their actions is from a "trust us, we have your backs" kind of perspective/thought process, but it's not also *overtly* corporate greed (as with other corporations).
kat: they're also really invested in getting the 'white-space' of the airwaves opened up, so internet can be broadcast that way.
The Buy'nLarge website is a joke, by the way. If you haven't seen Wall-e, do yourself an enormous favour, and go see it. It's my favourite Pixar film, which is saying a lot. Total shit-eating grin plastered firmly on my face when exiting the cinema.
bleh google becoming overlords... as opposed to microsoft who is pretty much already sort of an overlord... or apple who is DEFEINITELY an overlord due to shitslinging marketing... or the oil companies.. insurance companies? banks? wtf do I care if there's one more? There's no more feeling in my ass anyways. One more makes no difference. :P
