  geom constraint does the same as snapping with make live, but normal seems to do the trick combined with live.. cheers!
  vig will check out those bonus tools too, I was sure I installed them already but the menus gone

  It should just be under constrain->normal under the regular constraints

  If I understand this right you could also use the slightly bizarre Modify > Snap Together Tool.
