Auto-reload bitmaps in Max

Weird, sometimes reload works, sometimes it doesn't. Max 2009 sp1. Anyone have a clue?
"Reload textures on change" is on in the prefs, and sometimes it works really well, I just have to save my PSD and Max automatically refreshes without my having to even touch it. Awesomeness.
Other times I have to touch the viewport, sometimes I have to hit the bitmap's Reload button, and sometimes even this doesn't work and I have to restart Max completely.

It does a touchless auto-reload if the Material Editor is open and it's focussed on the Bitmap. Hit Reload once, leave the editor open, and now you can work in PS and see updates refresh a second after saving. Pretty nice.
I'm pretty they did that so that if you update multiple textures, Max won't lock up for so long trying to update them all at once like before.
