Max create wtf?!

For some reason, every time I create an object in Max, it creates at 0,0,0 no matter where I click, and I cant move the object.. I must have turned something on I didnt know about. Restarting Max and resetting the scene doesnt help 
EDIT: it looks like all new objects are being assigned a surface controller.. I have no idea how this happened or how to stop it.
EDIT AGAIN: Ok, I fixed it... Looks like somehow it was set as the default for position controllers. That was scary...

Can you select the object and go to the hierarchy tab on the modify panel then look at the link info tab? Are any of those lock boxes checked?
