Methods for hair planes

Right now, I'm trying to do the hair on a model with planes that will be alpha'd later. But right now, I'm just randomly slapping on planes, and hoping that it will turn out looking right. Are there any methods for this type of thing?

I've tried the varga hair tut and it works out well. I prefer the photoshop brush method he shows.
Another way I did recently for chunkier hair was to use zbrush entirely. I used the deco brush to create the alpha then painted in some chunks later and generated my normal map from that. I might do a little tut on that way one day. I like the deco brush.
