they're doing some crazy shit with photoprocessing and manipulation these days, eh? great choice of subject photographs, since there's so much relief detail there... would be curious to see the same tech applied to a wider variety of subjects. likely wouldn't look so hot on some things as others, but very interesting nonetheless.

oh, and you might want to edit your subject to suggest something about the image lighting thingy, "java goodness" really doesn't reference what the link is about.

Not quite. PTMs show soft-shadowing that's depth-accurate, captured from real lighting. Can't get that with a normalmap, even when you use the bump-shadowing hack. Might be a way to do something similar though, hmmmm.

Aha wow, i didnt even notice when i was first looking but yeah, you seem to be right. Thats way more impressive. Isnt there a way to do something similar with shadowed relief maps?

I think thats just an optical illusion, afiak thats actually "correct" our engine will give a similar effect if you just spin the lighting around on normal maps. Its just wierdness that you get from drastic lighting changes i think.

Hmm, yeah, might be possible. Probably not feasible in a real game, but cool to think about.

Yeah really at that point you're better off modeling some basic geometry to get the real silouhet+normals than using any of these expensive shaders.

Well in that PDF it describes the technique in the OP which is impractical for games, then switches to plain parallax occlusion which is already feasible and only marginally worse in most cases.

So... yeah, nice per pixel self soft shadowing coming soon enough.
