jeez I have been in agony since friday. my own fault for drinking so much fizzy crap.
seriously though the pain is unbelievable. only nurafen plus seems to work, but i can't take anymore for another 2 hours.
currently I have bag of frozen peas clamped to my mouth and 'clove oil' at the ready.
man that stuff tastes like crap

I had somethign like that once. I was chewing asprins on the tooth to get the pain to go away. Which btw, I was told by the dentist is a bad thing to do. Anyway ended up needing a root canal yay!!

Try taking advil extra strength though. It helped.

Yeah, I had a dentist drill into my nerve while taking out a cavity once. It is the only pain I have had that I would call "blinding" -- it made my vision fade white. I almost passed out a couple of times.

I usually don't make a big deal about pain, but daaaaamn, it was intense.

I went through the same thing frown.gif After I told my dentist that I'm usually very resistant to anesthesia and asking after he gave me a shot of Novocaine or Lidocaine or whatever they use nowadays if I should still be able to feel everything he told me I'm fine...

He then proceded to drill into my tooth, hitting the nerve (ensuring a root canal) and finished the work on the tooth before finally stopping to address my flailing arms and noises.

4 more shots later I was finally unable to feel my cheek on that side which is how you're supposed to feel when they're numbing the area frown.gif

To top it off while doing the root canal he broke a tool off in one of the canals and couldn't get it out. I had to go to a specialist who also couldn't get it out but was at least able to loosen it to the point where he could rinse the area underneath it and ensure that it wouldn't develop an infection.

    I fucking hate dentists.

I'm in the same boat. I didn't go to the dentist while in school because I was borderline homeless bum/average college student. But now I still haven't been and I know I'll either pass out or have to take a cyanide pill to end the pain when they drill. Can they put you to sleep for root canals and whatnot?

If I could be assured I'd get a nice hour or so of me dreaming being on the beach, while the dentist wrecks hell with my chompers, I'd go monthly.

AAWWW man I fucking HATE dentists. Worst experience ever: getting my wisdom teeth pulled. It didn't hurt but I was so stressed that I started crying when it started and the dentist had to wipe my tears cause I was strapped to crazy needles.

If you are worried about pain, hitting nerves, etc, go to an Oral Surgeon with someone else. They will put you under, and then you wake up feeling like a tard while everyone helps you to the car, but at least you don't have to hear your teeth cracking and grinding and all that shit smile.gif

I waited too long as well. Got about $4000 worth of work done in the last 6 months or so.
    - 4 root canals
    - 5 tooth extractions (with a 6th coming soon)

Hadn't gone to the dentist is about 6yrs. Several broken teeth were infected to the nerve. The most unbelievable pain was shooting from my jaw, up to the top of my head, and down my throat. When the infection was at it's worse, it gave me a kind of lock-jaw problem, and I couldn't open my mouth more than about 1/4 inch.

Go to the dentist. Ask for sedation if need be (as I did). But get it fixed. It's NOT worth the pain.

    Ugh...teeth problems.

    My story:

4 teeth removed, braces on my top jaw for several months

Braces off, awhile later, 2 teeth removed

Awhile later, 4 teeth removed, braces again..the whole shebang. Upper and lower, wire across the palette, rubber bands.

But yeah, best to. Much better to nip a problem in the bud than having to deal with something much worse later (wonder what the hell my mouth would look like now if I hadn't had all that done).

    G'luck Ruz.

I had my bottom wisdom teeth taken out last week, and while i'm mildly resistant to the anaesthetics and severely phobic of anything to do with teeth breaking, i actually laughed out loud (to my best ability, given the hand in my mouth and numbness) when he and his assistant had trouble getting my second tooth out. They ended up breaking it into a few pieces, and i laughed (grunted) out loud again.
So yes, drugs can be a good thing.

The definite downside to this is that i (apparently) still have two milkteeth that'll need to be removed and replaced, which'll cost me a shitload, and that'll just be for the screws. ugh.

edit: also, they had the option for putting you under completely. I only had local anaesthetics though, and like i said, i was fine. They first gave me a shot to sedate me somewhat, and then gave me a handfull of shots in the gums (which i didn't feel)

My teeth aren't too bad, but I did have one horrible, horrible cavity a while back. It was down to the root, and it required a root canal (which didn't actually hurt that much). I can completely sympathize.

I thought I was going to lose my mind. The pain was unbearable, and I felt so helpless. I ended up taking more Aspirin than any one person should take and just slept it off. Once I went to the dentist and had the root canal, though, it was fine.

You should definitely go as soon as possible. It sucks having them poke around in there, but you'll feel ten times better when all is said and done.

I have genetically bad teeth so I have had a lot of problems . I'll give you a few solutions that will work wonders on even the worst pain

#1 Advil Liqui-gel caplets are the most effective for tooth pain except maybe a morphine tablet ..they are even better then vicodine

#2 Extremly hot water and I mean so hot it will burn your taste buds and the inside of your mouth . Mix that with a large amount of salt . Rinse about a coffee cups worth over the tooth . It will hurt like a mother fucker and probebly even to the point of tears. Make sure you pee first because the water will be so hot you will almost piss yourself . The result though will be total pain relief for about an hour at least and maybe the pain will even go away . The infection has been drawn off of the nerve by the heat

#3 Mouth wash with 21.6% alcohol . Hold the mouth wash on the tooth for up to 5 mins and usually that has always worked to make the pain go away . Unless of course the nerve is completely infected and abscessed which use the hot salt water rinse in that case .

Having to pull out teeth or fill canals, and fix them is a sideeffect of not having gone to the dentist at a regular interval.

    Go to the dentist.

well as we're on the stories...

I've got 5 caps, had 4 root canals over a month, one the caps is on my front tooth! The other 4 are top and bottom, silver on top, ceramic on the bottom.

My lower jaw doesn't go numb. Most pain I ever had in my life.

My dentist said that my lower caps are the most beautiful she had ever seen, and the guy who made them died some days after his work was complete.

Dude Hawken, your caps are worth a shitload now! SELL SELL SELL!

    (shame he died though frown.gif)

I think one of the most uncofortable times at the dentist for me what when they were putting the braces on for the second time. I was only really able to start breathing through my nose at about 15/16 (deviated septum or something meant it was basically always sort of blocked).

So having the dentist spend a lot of time in my mouth (just his hands you sick gits) and spraying a LOT of water, was not pleasant when you can only inhale via the mouth. I inhaled quite a bit of water (the suction tube doesn't get it all) and had to fight the way the body spasms when doing that.

And then going to get braces tightened.....ugh. Not sure how many of you have experienced this. For those that haven't, the wire that goes through all the metal brackets on the teeth is tightened, pulling all the teeth. This can be pretty painful by the time you get home. I remember trying to eat a chocolate digestive biscuit and I wasn't actually able to bite through it because it hurt too much from the pressure on the teeth. Well, I could have done it, but the pain would not have been worth the damn biscuit. I had to break it into bits with my hands and just sort of suck on it till soft. Sorta like The Fly in a way.

    Grats Ruz.

I got a twist on that, Hawken. The dentist that did 3 of my fillings when I was 16, ended up murdering his wife and comitting suicide about 2 weeks after he did my last filling. He caught her cheating. Nice eh?

My teeth though - I have the unfortunate family lineage on my mother's side, for bad teeth. The french/czechoslovakia mix is just bad for enamel. My great grandmother and grandmother both lost ALL of their teeth before they were 30. My mother last about 10 teeth by the time she was 30, and has numerous caps & fakes. My eldest brother and myself also have bad teeth, regardless of how well we maintain them. I hardly drink soda, don't eat a lot of candy/crap food. I floss, brush 4 times a day, use mouthwash and chew sugar-free gum between meals. Yet, my damned teeth still rot. My dentist pointed out though, as I said, that some genomes just have weak enamel. Sadly, I'm one of those! frown.gif

Lupus I woul;d still have eaten the biscuits, cause I am very greedy he he.
seems you guys have had it a lot worse than me, but I can top that.
my dad had all his teeth out in one go when he was around my age. I mean every one of them. he was in agony,he had bad mouth absysses as well.

Funny though i have eaten vast amounts of sugar all my life but my teeth are ok on the whole.
I have drank lots of milk as well though, so that could be it

Mouthwash with high alcohol is a bad thing to use whoever mentioned it...even listerine by itself is too strong for someone with dental pain.

Braces? I had a third set of teeth as one of my babytooth is stuck in my gums but the dentist said it was fine as it wouldn't grow anymore...I skipped braces.

My condition was likely worse than anyone here has had, and mouthwash did in fact, help. Listerine, in particular. But it's a temporary solution to a very urgent problem.
