texturing tooled leather

starting to texture a saddle and i want to make it look like tooled leather. Does anyone have any tips to make a tooled leather texture?

Seriously though, like anything else, good reference is a must. From memory, tooled leather gets lighter on the edges of each indent, then darker in the sides of each crevice. If normalmapping it, then only those shades would be in the colormap, but the actual embossing would be via the normalmap.
