A head I started making this morning.

opinions, please.

This is an interesting design and I think it has a lot of potential. My suggestion is to spend more time on each aspect of this head.

For example, modeling gums from his teeth, nostrils, adding more edge loops to give his eyes a more defined shape.

Also, I would take a look at your horns from every angle possible and try to give them a dynamic curve from each point of view. From the front they look pretty good, but from the side your middle horn (pointing to the back) doesn't look as impressive.

Lastly, I would model the horns into the head, because right now they are just clipping into it.

I'd have to say that my biggest issue at the moment is the back of the head. It looks a bit too rounded, especially given the monstrous nature of the rest of the head. I think some elongation, or perhaps some spikes or ridges might be in order. Something to sync it with the front a bit more. Overall, I'd say it is looking quite monstrous. I'd wet myself if I met this thing in a back alley. I also like the slight tweak you made to the horns protruding from his brow. Curving the tips of the lower ones upward slightly was a good idea.

In my own artistic opinion (so take with a grain of salt

), its a neat idea but, I think you should continue with the skeletal look. I don't know what the final outcome would be, but at this point it seems to be a pity to put this great detail and style in the head and then sell the body short by creating a simple shape overall. Who knows its your vision, but I don't think it will work as well. I really like the idea you are generating with the head though.

what does your wireframe look like by the way, the shading looks a little odd

Why don't you find some ref's of something similar to what you are working on and sketch out a quick concept to see how well it will work.

I doubt it. Zbrush is too expensive, and the trial is probably too short seeing as I don't have any experience.

he ment that the massive ammount of polygons not defining any shape would make rick stirling scream i guess ( i can be wrong thou ) with that poly density you could make 4 of those characters without loosing detail.

It's looking okay, but I don't understand why you're using meta balls. It looks like they're giving you a very basic and blah shape, and at the same time adding loads of extra polys that give you a strange surface. It just seems very unpractical, you could probably make that shape with 70% less tris by doing it with a regular poly-modeling.

I would suggest you start over from scratch, and take this guy as a learning process. You really want to build up slowly, and not get to many polys that are not needed. As in the mesh you have now, you have so many wasted verts that are not adding to the shape that to clean it would take you 3 times longer than creating a new mesh with a nice flow. I just think you should see what mistakes you did with this attempt, and build up on your knowledge of modeling before you even start to tackle the texture on this guy. Ohh, and I think you should forget metaballs and just start from a box and build from that.
