Where, oh where, are the modders?

Hey, I'm a grad student studying game art, looking to begin taking part in the community and working on a bigger project. I hear that modding is a good way to do that, but I don't know where to begin looking for modders or mod projects that might be able to use someone like me. Can anyone point me in a particular direction?

Depending on how your art looks, I may know an opportunity for you. I'm part of a group making an independant game. They are still in need of some concept artists and modelers (not sure where your talents are). Check out http://www.ascension-game.com.
My role in it was to actually develop a mod for the game with the team I'm part of, but now I'm making models for the main game also.
